Faces of Recovery: Women and girls key focus of recovery effort

"The United Nations in Haiti has been able to help Haitian women and girls, thanks to the strong coordination and partnership between its different agencies," said Diene Keita, the UN Population Fund, UNFPA's Deputy Executive Director, as she visited a hospital in the town of L'Asile, which was badly damaged in the August earthquake.

“After the earthquake, conditions in the areas affected deteriorated significantly with the passage of Tropical Storm Grace. High winds and heavy rainfall triggered flooding and mudslides, adding to the list of obstacles to the humanitarian response in the south. Health workers helped the more than 12,000 injured people. Among them were midwives, who responded to the calls of pregnant women, nursing mothers and other vulnerable people.

UNFPA supported more than 1,540 deliveries in earthquake-damaged health institutions from August to October 2021. UNFPA Haiti will install two prefabricated hospitals in the most severely affected areas to ensure that holistic health care services are available to women and girls during crises. These containerized hospitals will be fully equipped and handed over to the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP). This partnership, made possible through funding from the Government of Luxembourg, will promote better access to sexual and reproductive health services in Haiti.”
