This story is from the "Faces of Recovery" series about how Haitians, the UN and partners responded to the devastation caused by the August 2021 earthquake.
Trained nurse, Eveline Dominique Chery works as a health and nutrition officer for UNICEF in Les Cayes in an area affected by the earthquake . As soon as the earthquake struck she rushed to help the people who were most seriously injured.
“I helped to transport several seriously injured people to the airport, because there was an immediate flight and these injured people took the opportunity to return to Port-au-Prince; we also brought other injured people to hospital.
Even though the systems and infrastructures have been damaged, we were able to provide services to the most in need and mobilize support right after the earthquake.
The good thing was that the most hard-to-reach people have also received support and this gives everyone hope. After two months of planning and work we can say that the health system is now more resilient. All this was an exercise of adaptation and capacity building”.
