This story is from the "Faces of Recovery" series about how Haitians, the UN and partners responded to the devastation caused by the August 2021 earthquake.
Women entrepreneurs in Haiti are being given the opportunity to relaunch their businesses after natural disasters strike, thanks to a UN Development Programme (UNDP) project. Yvrose Jeantiné who sells food in Port-au-Prince has benefitted from training and access to equipment.
“My life and work was severely impacted by the earthquake which struck Haiti in 2010. The project helped me to access business management training and gave me the opportunity to invest in equipment to develop my business. Without this support, I would have had to save money for months or even years to be able to buy my own refrigerator, which I need for my business.
Now in 2021, I and other women are better prepared for disasters. As a safety measure, our businesses are located in single-storey buildings, and we are close to our suppliers. So, if roads were to be blocked, we would be affected to a lesser extent. When we felt the tremors of the earthquake in August, we were terrified, but then we realized that it was just the ghost of 2010".
