This story is from the "Faces of Recovery" series about how Haitians, the UN and partners responded to the devastation caused by the August 2021 earthquake.
Sainte Elia lives in Maniche in the Sud department of Haiti, a locality badly affected by the 14 August earthquake. She is one of around a million women in Haiti who provides for an entire household.
“I was coming back from the market that morning, like I do every Saturday, but something told me not to enter my house, not to rush in. I was really scared when the earthquake struck and I just remained still on the ground for a few minutes. I had rushed home and left all the produce that I bought at the market on the path.
My house was destroyed, but my family was safe. If I hadn't listened to myself, maybe I wouldn't be telling you this story today.
Today, I feel as though we have been given another chance, so will keep on fighting for a better life."
