This story is from the "Faces of Recovery" series about how Haitians, the UN and partners responded to the devastation caused by the August 2021 earthquake.
Jean Dickson Massier, a UNICEF emergency officer, was on the frontline of the relief effort in Les Cayes after the earthquake but is now looking ahead to a future where his community is more resilient to disasters.
“My mother’s house was destroyed during the earthquake and was just meters away from where we were handing out relief supplies. I had to leave my own family in order to be able to serve the people in urgent need.
Two months on, we now see that we have learnt so much from the previous catastrophes. Our approach is different and our actions on the ground are more consistent. We have scaled up our response plan.
This new approach gives me hope and it also gives hope to people who have been affected. People are more resilient now. When I say people, I mean all of us, the affected populations but also the staff who serve them during the response. We are now all confident that we can get through this and we can recover”.
